Soccer
1. Overview
The popularity of soccer throughout the world is indisputable. In Singapore, soccer is also arguably one of the most popular sports. It is common to see children and teenagers having a game of soccer practically everywhere, in the soccer field, street soccer courts, void decks, or even basketball courts! Even adults would pay up to S$100 an hour to play on artificial turfs at midnight. These anecdotal observations are testament to the popularity of soccer.
The boys in PoiChingSchool are no exception. From empty plastic bottles to ping pong balls, our boys can be seen kicking almost anything in their path during recess. The Soccer CCA was set up in 2005 in order to meet the demands of pupils and to channel their enthusiastic kicking into something more meaningful. To date, the Soccer CCA is still a relatively new addition to the family of CCA available in PoiChingSchool.
When asked for his opinion about soccer, Bill Shankly, who once managed Liverpool FC, said during an interview -
"Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that."
In Poi Ching Soccer CCA, we are not that fervent. We believe that soccer is not just a game. Playing soccer is not just about scoring goals and winning the match. We believe in the character development of the boys and the inculcation of sportsmanship. In alignment with our school’s mission and vision, we seek to produce boys who will give their all to win fairly and to accept defeat graciously.Integrity is a value that is often emphasized to our boys.
We expose our boys in inter-school competitions at the zonal level and arrange friendly games with boys from other schools. Being a SAP school, our boys seldom have the chance to interact with boys with other ethnic groups. Soccer CCA has provided such opportunities especially during friendly games.

The crown on the football signifies the long term vision to become a soccer champion in the East Zone. The crown is made up of a teacher in the centre leading two pupils to achieve excellence in terms of character development and match victory.

At the start of 2009, we launched a CCA logo and a new training jersey to foster a stronger sense of identity among our P3 to P5 boys. Both the logo and jerseys were well-received by our boys as they wear their jersey with pride during training and competitive matches.
We have also begun our recruitment in 2009. We successfully conducted a trial for interested P2 pupils and have recruited enough pupils to form a pre-Junior Team.
In terms of training, we have placed more emphasis on developing our Junior Team since 2008. We will also be reviewing our training program for our Senior Team to incorporate more emphasis on character development. Although we do not have a regular coach, we manage to liaise with Tampines Rovers FC. They had kindly sent a Youth Team coach to help train our boys in 2009. Our teachers, Mr Ho and Mr Hasri are also qualified soccer coaches.
2. Teachers-in-charge

o Mr Mohd Hasri Bahari, advisor
Mr Hasri was once the Soccer OIC for Opera Estate Primary, leading them to success before joining Poi Ching as our HOD (PE). He is a qualified soccer coach and often offers valuable advice and support for our CCA.
o Mr Syed Fareed Abdul Manaf, OIC
Mr Syed has been the Soccer OIC for PoiChingSchool since 2006. He plays soccer regularly and is an ardent supporter of Arsenal FC. Like Arsene Wenger, Mr Syed believes in youth development and will often join the boys during their training matches, beating them with his pace and trickery.
o Mr Ho See Hoong, Victor, Training & Development
Mr Ho joined PoiChingSchool in 2009 and is also qualified soccer coach. His passion for soccer leads him to dedicate his time to train and develop our Junior Team. His experiences and contacts have been invaluable to our CCA. Mr Ho claims not to support any soccer clubs although he often uses Chelsea when playing FIFA 2009.
o Mr Choo Sing Wee, Logistics, Administrative & Discipline
Mr Choo has been with the Soccer CCA since 2007. Other than assisting Mr Ho during training, his duties include the logistic and administrative aspect of the CCA. Mr Choo has good rapport with both the Junior and Senior members of the CCA and also in charge of disciplinary issues. He supports Manchester United but does not agree with Ferguson’s treatment of referees. He also likes Juventus but does not condone the bribing of referees.
