The Singapore Youth Olympic Games 2010 (YOG)

Come 2010, Singapore will proudly be hosting the very first Youth Olympic Games (YOG) from 14 to 26 August. The YOG will be an Olympic Games especially for 14 – 18 years old athletes. These young athletes numbering close to 3000 from the 205 National Olympics Committees (NOCs) will compete in 26 sports and take part in Culture and Education Programme (CEP).

The Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games aims to inspire youth around the world to embrace, embody and express the Olympic values of Excellence, Friendship and Respect not only through sports but also through the Cultural and Education Programme. Hence, the Cultural and Education Programme (CEP) is an integral part of YOG.

The Cultural and Programme (CEP), athletes will have the chance to participate in CEP activities in two areas. The two areas are:

a) Cultural Programmes consist of activities that centre on the theme of celebrating the Olympic Movement and Spirit of Olympism together with the learning about cultural diversity.

b) Education Programmes consist of activities that centre on the 5 education themes :-

    i. Olympism – About the Olympics and its movement

ii. Skills development – Career and personal development

iii. Well-being and Healthy Lifestyles – Healthy eating and issues on doping

iv. Social Responsibility – Being a responsible global citizen

    v. Expression – Learning and interaction opportunities via the digital media

The International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) vision is for Youth Olympic Games (YOG) not only for sports but also for educational and cultural exchange amongst its young athletes. Hopefully this will provide an avenue for holistic experience for all participants in the coming inaugural Youth Olympic Games.
